So last night, my husband ruined a perfect Valentine’s Day by bringing home flowers and chocolate covered toffee for “the kids”. Thoughtful–yes. But we agreed to not celebrate it except for the children. Maybe he felt guilty watching me cut out hearts, decorating the table and their bedrooms door and really did want to do something for them. Or maybe he really wanted me to know how much he appreciates me, since toffee and chocolate is one of my favorite combos.

However, at first, all I could think of was that he was a snake. Then I remembered how much my husband hates surprises and when I took the advice from his step-mom and told him about his fortieth birthday trip surprise, he told me that he is trying to be more appreciative of good surprises. And the funny thing is that he is working hard at it. Why can’t I be a good sport too? And so last night, I climbed on his lap, gave him a big hug and a nice thank-you kiss for being so thoughtful.
