What makes you choose a book? If you’re like me it’s the title. It’s the very first thing I look at and if I like it, I’ll read the sample pages. So, you can imagine how important titles are to me. It’s comparable to a wine aficionado and like them, I have my own complicated process for deciding which title to give my WIP. Now, I know if I continue on the traditional publishing pathway that it really doesn’t matter because I’ll have little to no say, but that doesn’t stop me from marinating title ideas in my head until I find the right one.
Recently, I received some well thought out advice from a fellow PUBLISHED writer and she felt my title was too extreme (too tough) for my new ms. I was offended. My baby (title) wasn’t appropriate or appealing?? What. WHAT?
Well, I think she is right and she made a great suggestion for a new one, but I’m having a hard time letting my baby go. Even though I know it’s the right thing to do, I don’t want to say good-bye. I’m only 15k words into my manuscript, but I guess it’s better to do it now, then wait.
Maybe, I’ll wait for a few days more.
