Today, after I returned Gpa to his part of the nursing home, I witnessed something that made me pause. One of the nurses was trying to take one of the residents down to the dining hall and she did not want to go. The nurse started to turn the wheelchair around and the resident threw her cup of coffee on the nurse. Thankfully, the coffee was cold, so no harm done.
But here’s what gave me pause.
How many of us would have reacted like the women in the wheelchair?
I’ve seen this women repeatedly over the last six months and normally she is what you would consider a nice old lady. So what pushed her over the edge? I wondered if it was the nurse’s skin color. She’s from Nigeria. Maybe? Or was it something as small as she didn’t want to eat lunch. Whatever the reason, it made me wonder, where do I draw the line before fighting back?
