A blog from an editor and writer. Extremely insightful, but she picks a random commenter once a month and will critique their first 20 pages or their synopsis.

Don’t you just love the title for today’s post? It belongs to this great website that is for authors and it offers all sorts of perks. I didn’t even know it existed until I was reading the comment section on my fave website where a half a dozen authors were talking about submitting partials or fulls to an agent due to a contest. Awesome, right? I wanted to play too, so I went to the website they referenced and signed up. You can sign up for the basic membership, like I did, it’s free, or for thirty bucks you can get the premium membership. Here’s what you get for the basic membership:

Participate in free online courses. For example, “Edit Like A Pro-YA Edition”. From Sept 1st to November 15th. Free to basic members.

Webinars/Chats

Contests/Pitch Events-The one all of the authors were talking about was to the Seymour Agency and all they had to do was list their name, genre, word count, and include the first 250 words of their novel in the comment section. From that, the agent requested over a dozen partials or fulls. She loved the writing of one author so much, that although she wasn’t looking for that genre, she told the author if she had any romance novels to send them to her. (It was free.)

Of course, they offer more to the premium members and maybe one day I might want to do that, but for now I’m content with the basic membership. If you haven’t checked it out, what are you waiting for, click on the link above and if you like it, let me know why in the comment section of this post.

Synopsis…or sucknopsis?

synopsis

I have to admit that while I’m scrambling to write the ending of my book, I’ve
also attempted to start the synopsis that is required for the PPW contest and I
have to agree with Diana Peterfreund’s friend, it’s a sucknopsis. Quite
apropos, don’t you think? I’m sure that there are writers out there who sit
down and quickly type an interesting synopsis full of voice that makes the
story leap off the page. I’m happy for you (read: jealous, very jealous.) For
me it is painful, and I’d rather spend the afternoon…doing anything else—laundry,
babysitting a bunch of tantrum-throwing-two year olds, cleaning the bathroom floor with a toothbrush, paying the bills, running twenty miles, and let’s not forget the oh so enjoyable female exam.

Not sure where to start or what to include, since I have never done this before I
consulted several published author and editor blogs. I thought I’d share a few
of my favorite with you.

queries, synopsis, Writing Contest

While the writing world is in an uproar over several blogs about query letters and agents not sending response letters (read about it here), I’m pulling my hair out. Three days ago, I found out that the Pikes Peak writing contest is now open (details here). My cousin told me about this contest last year and I planned on entering it. Erroneously, I thought that the contest opened after the new year. My goal was to have a finished ms, in at least second draft form. I’m not finished with the first draft. I read the rules thinking that I would be able to finish by the November 15th cutoff, but I also have to have a synopsis. Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. That’s me screaming like a two year-old throwing a tantrum while I’m typing at my computer. My kids think I’m crazy and my husband knows I am. Watch out deadline I coming after you and you should be scared. Really scared.
